Stress is something we all deal with. It can be caused by environmental factors, relationships, medical needs, sudden and unexpected change, and even the day-to-day expectations of life. Prolonged periods of stress can have negative effects on not only our mental well-being but our physical health as well.
Exploring Solutions: Taking Action
With so many techniques out there, it can be daunting to know where to start.
Mindfulness and deep breathing, especially paired with music, can be beneficial in managing stress.
Mindfulness alone can assist with recognizing what emotions we feel, how and where our body is reacting to those emotions, and tuning into what we may need to manage it more effectively.
Deep breathing assists with communicating to our mind that we are safe and supports the body in bringing us into a calmer state of mind by activating our PNS (Parasympathetic Nervous System).
Mindfulness and deep breathing paired with music adds a layer to the practice, providing an audible constant for our busy minds to return too, supporting the flow of our breath, and can curate a safe space for our minds to explore.
Mindfulness, specifically for traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury survivors, can be beneficial with lowering anxiety, increasing sustained attention, bringing awareness to the physiological effects of our emotions, and improving cognitive function.
Below is a 30 minute playlist with the intention of bringing relaxation, reducing stress, and allowing your subconscious to go on a vulnerable yet safe journey via iso-principle.
I encourage you to get comfortable, close your eyes, and openly allow any thoughts, feelings, and sensations that flow through you; validating your experience as a listener and allowing your mind to explore in a musical context.
Were any of these songs familiar to you? Did you see any scenery or colors? Was it difficult to remind yourself to be present with the music and the sensations/thoughts that popped up? Let me know what your experience was like in the comments!
Simply notice these without placing any judgment on them.
Sincerely,
Would you like to experience the transformative power of Music Therapy to enhance your recovery process following a brain injury or spinal cord injury?
